Outstanding Issues

• A prophecy is fulfilled, and the active player resolves Publius Scipio's Fate: ability, causing its lasting effect to get established. Later that turn, the active player uses a creature (that has neighbors) to fight, but it is destroyed in the fight. What happens in regards to Public Scipio's lasting effect? Does it resolve? Is any damage dealt?

  Arcana Advises: The lasting effect established by Publius Scipio technically resolves — as a friendly creature was used — however, the resolution effectively fizzles, with no damage being dealt to any creatures.

  No damage is dealt to any creatures because the creature that fought left play prior to resolving the lasting effect established by Publius Scipio. While there is a carve-out (from Movement Between Zones rules) that allows abilities to reference cards as they were immediately prior to leaving play, this is not applicable in this scenario:

  If cards leave play while resolving an ability, later instructions in the same ability refer to the cards as they were immediately prior to leaving play.

  The creature that fought did not leave play while resolving the lasting effect's ability, it left prior to resolving the ability (in the fight). By the time the active player chooses to begin resolving the ability, the creature that fought is in the discard pile and has no neighbors.
