Charybdis is in homage to the Greek mythology monster Charybdis who lingered on one side of The Strait of Messina (the narrow passage between the island of Sicily and the "toe" of Italy's "boot") along side Scylla who was on the other side.
When Odysseus attempted to sail between them, he encountered disaster on both sides. Being caught between Charybdis and Scylla is a lot like being between a rock and a hard place.
