Compatible Format(s): Archon, Sealed

Description: Adaptive was previously an official premiere event format. It is still a popular format for community leagues such as KAGI, KTL and B League.

In the best-of-three variant the players use their own deck in the first game, then swap decks in the second game. Whichever deck goes first in the first game should go first in all games. If the third game occurs, players bid chains on whichever deck they consider stronger. The player who brought that deck starts by bidding 0 chains, and then the players take turns bidding until a player declines to bid higher. The player who bid the highest uses that deck for the third game, starting the game with a number of chains equal to the winning bid.

In the best-of-one variant, determine randomly which deck will go first, and then players choose which deck they want to play. If they choose different decks, they each play with the chosen decks. If they choose the same deck, they proceed to bidding and then play one game, with the winner of the bidding starting the game with a number of chains equal to the winning bid.

There is no maximum chain bid. Chains 25-30 follow the chain tracker pattern of -5 cards. The next six chains are a -6 card penalty, and so on.

Philosophy: Chains are a balancing mechanic built into the base rules of KeyForge. They can be utilized to allow two decks with a large difference in strength to play at roughly even footing. This helps to mitigate the impact of simply bringing the strongest deck.
